There are few things in American culture that affirm cultural relevance (and no, I’m not talking about the “Jersey Shore” kids).
Being featured on the CBS television newsmagazine “60 Minutes” fits the bill.
On the heels of multiple marquee performances , Pacquiao will appear on the popular program sometime in the Fall, with footage chronicling Pacquiao’s preparation for his March 13 bout against Joshua Clottey.
Other athletes that have been featured on the program in recent months include Andre Agassi, Michael Vick and Shaun White. Unlike Agassi and Vick, however, Pacquiao is in the prime of his career. For an Asian-born athlete who speaks spotty English, his appeal in America is nothing short of a revelation.
In an interview with The Examiner’s Michael Marley, Top Rank CEO Bob Arum said: “It just shows that interest in Manny has transcended sports, gone beyond that”.
“Good Morning America on the ABC network is also going to do something on Manny. It is really phenomenal how the interest is widening on Pacman.”
Maybe the popularity of Pacquiao will persuade those mainstream media types into postponing their decades-long boxing obituary? Either way, the Pacman has answered the call of the mainstream.
In a sport starving for attention, this is the ideal anecdote.
