Oh, how the mighty have fallen.
According to ESPN.com’s Dan Rafael, the regular HBO PPV crew (Jim Lampley, Larry Merchant, etc) will not be on hand for the April 3 rematch between Bernard Hopkins and Roy Jones Jr. While the distribution of the bout will be handled by HBO, Golden Boy Promotions will be responsible for the production of the event.
Jones and Hopkins fought in 1993 as Middleweights, back when Jones was a wunderkind and Hopkins was a still-developing Philly fighter with little name recognition. While the initial bout had few calling for a return match, interest reached a crescendo after Hopkins knocked out Felix Trinidad in 2001. At that time, they could not agree on a purse split, and both went their respective ways.
This rematch lost any and all cache once Jones lost via 1st round KO to Australian bruiser Danny Green in December. The collective egos of Jones, Hopkins and Golden Boy decided to go on with the show anyway.
The question is: how many people will be watching?

There are casual fans that actually think that Roy Jones is still relevant, but if this PPV cracks 100,000 buys I would be shocked

I have to be honest, I’ll watch it but I won’t pay for it.

Golden Boy Promotions knows Merchant, Steward and myself would be unable to call this fight due to hysterically laughing at the site of these 2 guys fighting. Merchant was still several years away from being a senior citizen when these guys first fought

3-5 years from now, hbo crew won’t call pacquiao-mayweather fight. It will happen, and by that time Gamboa and Lopez will be the headliners on the news.
What comes around goes around.

If I find myself watching the fight on tv in my dreams, I’ll make sure to turn it off. Why can’t you fight when you were still worth watching? If you’re fighting now for the money, just ask the fans for donations and save us the trouble of going through the pain and boredom of watching the fight.

Golden Boy is worried with the HBO top panel’s too honest commentaries not only in the fight but on the other issues. GBP handling the broadcast simply means CENSORSHIP. Golden Boy just controlled The Ring Magazine. Now they want to control the TV coverage. Nayve they’re now in the process of handling PPV coverages.

The fans will watch it on free-tv.

Only Golden Boy Promotions would dare to promote this kind of fight, and force HBO to cover it…..
This is a worthless fight…

If this is true that Larry Merchant and Jim Lampley are not covering this fight, thanks to them.GBP is becoming the ” plague ” of boxing. They make boxing fans sick with their greedy antics.
