Someone forgot to tell Floyd Mayweather how difficult it is to play the villain. Now at the height of his mainstream popularity, Floyd has been able to climb boxing’s lofty financial ladder by playing the ‘heel’ (In the world of Professional Wrestling, heels are the “bad guys”.). He has danced with the stars, wrestled ‘The Big Show’ at WWE’s biggest show, showcased his wealth on HBO’s hit series 24/7 and after earning boatloads of money from fighting Oscar De La Hoya, changed his moniker from “Pretty Boy’”to “Money”.
It looks like it is more fun to be the heel. The ultimate “good guy”, Oscar De La Hoya, protected that golden image. He had to speak, dress, and carry himself a certain way to continue the public’s perception of him as a good guy. Because he had the requisite boxing skills, it’s the image that sold the tickets and the pay-per-views.
But it looked as if Floyd was able to approach marketing himself in a completely different manner. He was able to be as boisterous, loud, and disrespectful as he wanted (going as far as to insult the very commentators who call his fights at HBO), it only fanned the flames of his popularity. The more trash Floyd talked, the more attention he was able to draw, and the more the mainstream public loved him.
However, beneath the surface, at the very same time, boxing critics and enthusiasts began to hate Floyd for all the same reasons the general public fell in love with him, and his legacy and image have taken a hit. Floyd has failed to realize that his legacy, the very same legacy he has fought so hard to create and sustain, can be distorted by biased writers, promoters and fighters in an attempt to re-create an alternate history that is much more harmful to the former pound for pound champ.
Floyd recently encountered a small taste of the effects of his heel turn, when he had an impromptu radio interview with hip hop artist R.A. the Rugged Man on Sirius satellite radio. R.A. asked several questions and pointed to various discrepancies in Floyd’s fight history in an attempt to discredit Floyd’s opponents, selection of fighters, business acumen and even his heart. The conversation was immensely popular on the internet message boards and has helped promote R.A.’s upcoming CD better than any traditional hip hop promotion. However, the fact remains, as much as Floyd’s antics in the public have made it difficult to feel sorry for him, how much truth was behind the allegations?
For instance, yes, Floyd fought a much smaller man in his comeback fight, in Juan Manuel Marquez. According to R.A. and 90% of the boxing “insiders”, this was a terrible idea from the start. But fighters take tune-up fights all of the time, so why should Floyd have to jump back into the competitive pool after an 18-month layoff?
Manny Pacquiao trainer Freddie Roach was previously quoted as saying, “Marquez could give Mayweather a lot of trouble. I would have to say Marquez is the smartest fighter today. He’s like a scientist. Mayweather has never faced adversity like Marquez did when he was knocked down three times. He has always picked easy fights. He’s never faced adversity like Marquez.” Yet, as the fight rapidly approached, Roach’s stance on the fight changed, and by the time Floyd was standing at the winner’s press conference, Roach was sending condescending congratulations in an attempt to mock his return effort.
R.A. also contended that Mayweather ducked a fight with Antonio Margarito for $8 million to instead fight Carlos Baldomir. Once again showing that the boxing enthusiasts are choosing to either rewrite history or focus on certain elements of the truth in an attempt to disparage the villain. Mayweather, when rejecting then promoter Bob Arum’s offer to fight Margarito, did so to opt out of his contract with Arum to become a promotional free agent. According to Bob Arum, Mayweather preferred to await the outcome of the Oscar De La Hoya-Ricardo Mayorga fight, instead of committing to Margarito, because he preferred a fight with Oscar. R.A. and fellow Floyd critics have left out that there was a limited window in his contract with Arum to exercise his buyout option, and Arum had already gone on the record stating he didn’t want to have anything to do with a fight with Oscar (“I don’t want to because if I did that fight, I would be working for such a small percentage, it’s not worth it,” Arum said).
History changes over time. And history’s perception of Floyd has gone from the pound for pound king, to a timid, fight ducking, greedy coward. But the facts don’t support this argument. What the facts do support is Floyd wants to fight for the biggest purses on the biggest stages for the biggest share.
We do know that, just over the horizon, the potential Pacquiao-Mayweather mega-fight will provide the Mayweather with a stiff challenge and jaw-dropping paycheck.
There is no question who will play the villain in the mythical match of modern day boxing superheroes. The only question is: will the villain die in the end?

You could fit what you people know about boxing on a stamp! Floyd mayweather and manny are cut from different cloth. although manny is a good fighter, he only wins by doing as Joe calzaghe does and punch and run. in previous fights against chumps this has been allowed. How will Manny’s limited defence cope with the greatest counter puncher since sugar ray. Also Floyd has an incredible defence he rarely gets hit and even when he has fought so called champs he has shown that his chin is very stable. Manny will be chasing for a change not being chased down. this will open up counter opps for Floyd. My money would be on Mayweather

The very reason for floyd’s comeback is not for the love of boxing, lets face it he retired because he is running out of good opponents in his weight class and to have a good fight is to moved up to the middle weight class but the problem was there’s a lot of elite fighters in that division that he is avoiding to fight, so he made his exit,went on to dance and wrestler and most of all to waste all of his cash and now that his broke he suddenly misses boxing because somebody in the name of Pacman is drawing attention in the world of boxing, now he is wants to reclaim the title that once he despised..you can fool some people sometimes floyd but not all the time you pathetic niger.

Floyd has not shown his chin is stable, that’s bullshit. He’s been rocked by feather fist Corley at 140, and he barely ever gets his chin touched so how can any intelligent person say his chin is stable? Manny’s chin is 10x what Floyd’s is and that’s actually proven. Telling people they don’t know boxing, Manny’s defense was better against Hatton and DLH in their respective performances, did you even watch the fights. Manny P earned thru hardwork his status as the the No. 1 alltime boxer in the planet. On the contrary, Floyd earned the same status thru his “BIG” mouth. If I were Manny, I won’t even consider fighting Floyd simply because he is an “unworthy opponent”. That way, Floyd won’t make a single cent out of Manny’s fame and hardwork. Definitely a Fair Article. This fight pits the best offensive fighter of our time(Pac Man) versus the best defensive fighter (Floyd) of our time. They in fact need each other, because this is the biggest fight out there and probably the biggest ppv selling fight of all time if marketed correctly. People hate Floyd because he refuses to be what others want him to be. He goes in and fights to win, but he fights more intelligently and sustains less damage. He will mix it up and put you down if he has to look at the hatton, corrales, and gatti fights.

Pacquiao can go ahead, get in the ring with everybody else and he’ll beat them, but his faith would change once he faces Mayweather or King Kong. Mayweather will beat him in the most convincing manner. It won’t be as easy as other fights, but Mayweather will prevail. I can’t wait to see this fight.

These are the two best fighters right now, like them or not, this is the showdown that the people and history wants to see. You have two different fighters going at it, battling for not just money but the title of best pound for pound fighter alive. I would love to see this fight. As much as I don’t like Money’s mouth, you can’t teach the skills and speed he has. On the other hand, Pac-Man may not be as gifted a fighter as Money, but he has the heart of a true champion. Mayweather retired because he ran out of easy opponents! On his return for money made a deal with a featherweight, ducked the true welterweights(again) and cheated on the scales of a smaller guy(2 pounds over the contracted weight), then did he’s roll and run all night long to an old slow bloated featherweight. Let him fight a true elite welterweight which are SO MANY of them and we will shut up… God, is it really that hard? Just Berto or even the defeated Cotto.

While Pacquiao tears through guys bigger than him with ferocity — remember, Pacquiao was a junior lightweight until last year and has fought only four times at heavier than 130 pounds — Mayweather has avoided the top challenges, for the most part, in recent years. That’s why he never fought Cotto or Antonio Margarito or Paul Williams or Shane Mosley.
While Pacquiao has destroyed the bigger Cotto, Oscar De La Hoya, Ricky Hatton (with a single punch in the second round) and David Diaz in his last four fights, Mayweather picked on the much smaller Marquez, needed 10 rounds to get rid of the smaller Hatton and escaped with a split decision against De La Hoya.
One guy (Mayweather) talks about fighting the best, but has yet to face a prime welterweight. The other guy (Pacquiao) takes on the best guys who are bigger than him and does it in an exciting fashion.
Does anyone actually believe Mayweather’s nonsense that Pacquiao is afraid to fight him? Obviously, it’s all posturing for the business deal that I believe will eventually be made to match them.

how can you say he is the best when all he does is run around to win a fight beating up a small guy from 130lb going up to his weight. calling himself the best when he fails to face cotto, mosley or even margarito the best ones in his weight class. he is a coward! cowards dont deserve a place in sports!

I think Pacquiao should fight 1.Foreman (newly-crowned middleweight champ)at a catchweight of 148-150lbs for his 8th division world title or 2. challenge the winner of the Mosley-Berto WBA-WBC Welterweight Unification Fight this Jan 2010. Option 1, will have little risk for PACMAN and another historic breakthrough to gain. Option 2, will make PACMAN the welter unification champ (i.e, WBO-WBC-WBA Welter Champ + Ring Magazine’s Welterweight Linear Champ). That would exactly give PACMAN 11 world titles in all beating topnotcher De La Hoya whose got 10! It will make PACMAN: “The greatest boxer of all time.” Besides the money factor, fighting Mayweather won’t make history. PBF Mayweather has no championship belt to offer, just trash talk. So let PACMAN go for the Guinness Book of World Records, fight Foreman or winner of Mosley-Berto next!!! PACMAN will be remembered by his HISTORIC ACHIEVEMENTS and not by MONEY!!!

Manny only stands a punchers chance against Floyd and history shows that the great boxer beats the great puncher more than 80% of the time i.e Ali Foreman,Ali Frazier,Ali Liston,Leonard Hearns,Leonard Hagler,Leonard Duran(no mas) Jones Tony, remember guys styles make fights,Floyd will frustrate Manny and go left hook happy, Floyd has beaten many punchers Manny has never face or beaten a boxer of Floyd calibre and don’t forget Floyd is a five weight class champion who has beaten the title holder in all five division and he’s still UNDEFEATED.

When I say titles I am talking about WBA WBC and IBF alot of you guys just know about Manny within the past few years, Manny got beaten before three times even knocked out and don’t pretend he didn’t duck Marquez the last time. As for slapping and running in a fight the goal is to hit and not get hit, look at some of the so call ring worriors their lives are over after boxing.

Prosperity, I have a DVD of Pacquiao’s career starting from his 106 fights. And I have a collection of all his fights in a hard drive so I know how he transformed into a complete fighter. Do you want a copy? He didn’t fight Marquez the third time on the same weight because at that point of his career he’s already a lightweight that’s why he chose Diaz. Pacquiao is no idiot, he knows his capabilities. Almost all boxers dubbed as all time greats had losses on their records so don’t give me that zero loss shit.

Mayweather is a joke! Yeah he’s undeffeated, because he hand picks his fights!. He dosen’t take on all comers. He’s all talk. Manny has ducked NO ONE! He has fought everyone put in front of him! He didn’t run around like a little girl slapping at his opponent for POINTS! OK, he beat Marquez, but PACMAN beat both Dela Hoya & Hatton in brutal fahion! Mayweather took Hatton in 9…Pacman took him in 2 & Hatton didn’t get up like he did with Floyd. I’m not on the band waggon, I’ve seen everyone of Pacman’s fights. He has fought the WORLD’s best, not just he thought he could beat! Pacquiao-Mayweather will never happen, because Mayweather is going to do what he does best RUN his mouth & RUN away from this match as fast as he can!
