According to multiple reports, the Juan Diaz-Paul Malignaggi rematch will take place in Chicago on December 12 and be televised by HBO. The first bout was shrouded in controversey, thanks to the judging ineptitude of Texas judge Gale Van Hoy. Van Hoy scored the fight for the hometown fighter Diaz, 118-110, which appeared far too one-sided in a contest most scored for Malignaggi.
While the rematch would draw better in Texas or New York City (Malignaggi’s hometown), neither side were willing to travel to enemy territory. Chicago, with its dense base of Italian-Americans and strong fight following, became the logical point of compromise.
After all of the posturing, cooler heads prevailed. Neither camp had a bigger fight on the immediate horizon, and with HBO dates in such demand, both camps bit the bullet. Malignaggi needs an impressive win against an elite opponent, while Diaz will be looking to show that Juan Manuel Marquez did not take the tread out of his tires.
Rest assured, Gale Van Hoy will not be one of the judges assigned to the rematch.
