Heavyweight contender Fres Oquendo might be forced to pull out of his televised October 10 fight with undefeated Odlanier Solis at Madison Square Garden’s WAMU Theatre. Oquendo is currently bogged down with legal issues at the moment, which may not allow him to travel outside of his Illinois home base. He has a mandated court appearance on Thursday evening. Oquendo contacted FightHype on Monday evening to discuss matters and to let the fans know that he’s doing his best to resolve the issue so he can still fight.
Oquendo contacted FightHype on Monday evening to discuss matters.
“[Solis] is a fight that has to be made,” Oquendo said. ”Now, here I am in a position to fight him again, and he’s just lucky that I won’t be fighting. I’ll be the one to expose him, just like Klitschko exposed Arreola.”
Added Oquendo: “He is not as serious as one is supposed to be when you are on top of the world Heavyweight rankings.”
For Oquendo, this will represent another setback in a career full of close calls and controversial decisions. Most observers thought he did enough to take Chris Byrd’s Heavyweight belt in 2003. Close losses to John Ruiz, Evander Holyfield and James Toney have prevented Oquendo from taking his place among the Heavyweight elite.
“To this day, nobody has beaten me convincingly,” Oquendo said. ”I’ve never lost devastatingly…. all my so-called losses have been controversial.”
With Oquendo likely out of the picture for Saturday, Top Rank Vice President Carl Moretti says they are working on a short-notice opponent for Solis.
The show will go on Saturday evening with or without Oquendo. Whether he gets a crack at Solis remains to be seen.
