When John Duddy lost his undefeated record to journeyman Billy Lyell in April, it marked the culmination of what many boxing experts long suspected about the charismatic Irishman: the hype far outweighed the substance. While much of the pomp and circumstance surrounding Duddy has faded, he returns to his adopted hometown on the non-televised undercard of Top Rank’s “Latin Fury 12″ card from the WAMU Theatre at Madison Square Garden on October 10.
Duddy squares off against Michi Munoz (21-3 14Kos), a Mexican journeyman who has been knocked in two of his last three fights. This is supposed to be a soft touch for Duddy, the type of opponent who should provide little resistance. A motif throughout Duddy’s career is that he makes things harder on himself than he should. Against Yory Boy Campas, he stood toe-to-toe against the veteran, almost losing his then-undefeated record in the process. Journeyman Walid Smichet and aging Howard Eastman forced Duddy into dangerous inside fights.
That is why, whether Duddy is the goods or not, he makes for interesting fights. Blood and guts sell in this sport, and the Irishman provides that in spades. The question remains whether Munoz can bait Duddy into an inside battle of attrition. If he does, it can be a long night at The Garden for Duddy.
